Most people who buy a calming diffuser are buying their second one. The first didn't work, they decided the whole idea was nonsense, and they went back to cleaning the carpet.

There are usually three reasons it failed. None of them is your cat.

It was in the wrong room. Cats mark where they feel least secure — a bedroom, a hallway junction, wherever another cat corners them. Not the living room where the spare socket happened to be. And two spots are actively wrong: in a hallway, where airflow carries it away, and beside the litter box. The largest brand in this category admits both in its own FAQ, buried where nobody reads it.

It couldn't reach far enough. One diffuser covers roughly [SQ FT]. Most homes are bigger. If your cat sleeps two rooms from the plug, that unit has never once reached her.

It wasn't given long enough. Most people who see a change see it between day four and day fourteen. But the standard kit is sold with no timeline at all, so people quit right around the point it might have started working.

What to expect, and when to judge it

Days 1–3: usually nothing. That's normal.
Days 4–14: most people who see a change see it here — fewer incidents, less hiding, one cat tolerating another in the same room.
Day 14: your checkpoint. Set a reminder now.
Weeks 3–8: if it's working, it deepens. Steady, not dramatic.

On day 14, ask one question: has anything at all changed? Not solved — changed.

If the answer is no, email us that day. We'll ask two questions about placement, because that's usually what it is. If placement isn't the answer, we refund you and tell you honestly that this isn't the product for your cat.

It doesn't work for every cat

We'd rather say this now than have you find out in week three and feel lied to again.

For roughly one cat in three, a pheromone diffuser makes no observable difference. The published research is genuinely mixed — a 2023 review of eight controlled trials found the evidence weak, with effects seen mostly while the diffuser is running and little lasting benefit after it stops.

We sell it anyway, because for the other two in three it does something, and because the alternative for a lot of people is giving up a cat they love. But you should know the odds before you spend the money, not after.

See a vet first if

The peeing started suddenly, there's blood, she's straining or going more often, or she's stopped eating. Sudden litter box changes can mean a urinary blockage, which is an emergency in male cats. No diffuser fixes that.
